BOOM! It's winter.
METEOROLOGICAL WINTER MAY JUST START IN ERNEST. PLEASE USE THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS TO PREPARE YOURSELF AND YOUR HOME FOR ANY WINTRY WEATHER. IT HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN.
This was at the bottom of the Severe Weather Alert window I opened this morning at weather.com.
Outside of the misspelling, I noted its rather doomsdayish (did I just make up a word?) tone.
They're predicting very cold weather and snow in the Philly region. A week ago I was sweating outside in a tee shirt while I did some last-minute gardening. It's usually like that in this meteorologically schizo area; we go from toasty to frostbite warnings in the space of a few days.
BOOM! It's winter.

(It's Ernest's cold, cold heart!)
We're cooling down, that's for certain.
Still, we generally get crappy winters in this region. We'll go into the freezer for a while, then when we get a storm system more often than not it'll bring its own warmth. Then it's a race between how much of it falls through the layer of cold air as snow before things warm up and it turns to rain. Few meteorological things are as depressing as seeing a promising snowfall turn into gray slush. People will still drive terribly but there's no acceptable justification for saying "I'm not going to try driving in that" and staying home. It's Lose:Lose.
